Today we're gonna be talking about a topic that's less sort of time-sensitive 00:17.000 --> 00:21.000 as we have done in the past. We're gonna be talking about the whole yellow paint debate. 00:21.000 --> 00:24.000 For those people who aren't familiar with what the yellow paint debate is, 00:24.000 --> 00:28.000 it's essentially this idea that game developers use yellow paint in games 00:28.000 --> 00:33.000 and amid of other different accessibility ideas to help people along the way. 00:33.000 --> 00:38.000 And sometimes it's very useful. Sometimes it's very, it's something we like to highlight 00:38.000 --> 00:43.000 and talk about. And sometimes it's a bit of a negative and it leads to some criticisms. 00:43.000 --> 00:47.000 And there's a whole bunch of different reasons as to why it's a topic of debate. 00:47.000 --> 00:51.000 So that's what we're going to talk about today. So to kick that off, 00:51.000 --> 00:55.000 I guess, you know, what's sort of our general consensus about yellow paint? 00:55.000 --> 00:58.000 Do we think it's good for the video games? Do we think it's sort of holding them back? 00:58.000 --> 01:00.000 What's sort of the take on it? 01:02.000 --> 01:08.000 It's good for me. I like it. It works for me. You know, I'll take the name bad boy, 01:08.000 --> 01:14.000 but only, you know, with the brackets at games in between it, I think. 01:14.000 --> 01:19.000 Because, yeah, I don't know, sometimes I will need something to be like, 01:19.000 --> 01:23.000 yeah, this is where you need to go. There was a lot of times, 01:24.000 --> 01:27.000 I was playing, the thing I think of is The Last of Us Part II Remastered, 01:27.000 --> 01:30.000 where I was playing that and I was like, OK, follow the light. 01:30.000 --> 01:32.000 But then there's some sections in the series where I'm like, OK, 01:32.000 --> 01:36.000 there's a lot of bits where it just feels very, and then you'll get to a door. 01:36.000 --> 01:39.000 The amount of times you go to unlock a door and it's like, no, not that door. 01:39.000 --> 01:42.000 That door's locked. You have to go find another way into that. 01:42.000 --> 01:45.000 And it's like, why do I have the prompt to even unlock the door? 01:45.000 --> 01:50.000 In any case, I need it because I'm not very good at many things. 01:50.000 --> 01:54.000 But, you know, I think it's a thing of like, it doesn't really, 01:54.000 --> 01:57.000 does it really break the immersion that much? 01:57.000 --> 02:01.000 I don't think so. I think there's cases where it can, 02:01.000 --> 02:05.000 but I think for the most part, I think that, again, we use the topic, 02:05.000 --> 02:08.000 it's yellow paint, right? That's the thing that we use as the thing that stands out. 02:08.000 --> 02:12.000 You go into a game where the quite natural environments and then all of a sudden 02:12.000 --> 02:15.000 this yellow paint saying this is where you can climb or something. 02:15.000 --> 02:17.000 And that's the thing that people draw their attention to. 02:17.000 --> 02:20.000 But there are various different accessibility avenues that they use to, 02:20.000 --> 02:24.000 to help gamers along. And I, again, I think that, 02:24.000 --> 02:26.000 I think that they're generally speaking well done. 02:26.000 --> 02:30.000 And I think that they're, I think that they're a benefit to players because, 02:30.000 --> 02:33.000 again, if you want that sort of hyper immersive quality, 02:33.000 --> 02:35.000 then you can go and find games that are like that. 02:35.000 --> 02:37.000 But for a lot of people, games are supposed to be fun. 02:37.000 --> 02:39.000 You're supposed to be able to go in and be able to enjoy yourself, 02:39.000 --> 02:41.000 not get confused and aggravated and frustrated, 02:41.000 --> 02:43.000 not knowing where to go and what you can and cannot climb. 02:43.000 --> 02:45.000 So I think, I think that is helpful, 02:45.000 --> 02:47.000 especially for those who, again, you know, 02:47.000 --> 02:51.000 require those sort of accessibility features to be able to play games in the 02:51.000 --> 02:52.000 first place, you know, 02:52.000 --> 02:54.000 and we're not just talking about those with disabilities either. 02:54.000 --> 02:58.000 There are younger players, people who need those things to help them along 02:58.000 --> 02:59.000 their way. 02:59.000 --> 03:01.000 We've improved a lot in that regard. 03:01.000 --> 03:07.000 And mostly thanks to games such as The Last of Us or God of War or Forza 03:07.000 --> 03:10.000 Motorsport. Right. But I think it's, I mean, 03:10.000 --> 03:14.000 lots of words be spoken about this matter because I think it mostly depends on 03:15.000 --> 03:17.000 the genre we're talking about. 03:17.000 --> 03:24.000 So the main like sort of controversy came up after Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, 03:24.000 --> 03:27.000 if I'm correct. Right. So Yellowpaint, 03:27.000 --> 03:31.000 I think it all started with Uncharted-like games, 03:31.000 --> 03:36.000 like the very Uncharted and then Assassin's Creed-ish and, 03:37.000 --> 03:43.000 and God, Tomb Raiders, right. 03:43.000 --> 03:49.000 That followed sort of the semi-open world plus Uncharted-like sections. 03:49.000 --> 03:55.000 And we briefly discussed how in a previous episode, 03:55.000 --> 04:01.000 how Roblox and new audiences needed to be hand-guided in a very different way, 04:01.000 --> 04:04.000 in a very fast, you know, like, 04:05.000 --> 04:07.000 you can do this. 04:07.000 --> 04:12.000 I'm hand-holding you because I'm teaching you very quick the things you can do and 04:12.000 --> 04:19.000 how my friend Elena from Razer Games had this beautiful thread on Twitter 04:19.000 --> 04:23.000 explaining how audiences change things. 04:23.000 --> 04:26.000 But I think you mentioned something very important here, Ben, 04:26.000 --> 04:30.000 that is how, as I said, depending on the game and depending on the genre, 04:30.000 --> 04:34.000 it can be a little bit too intrusive or, you know, 04:34.000 --> 04:39.000 like breaking the immersion, missing the point, actually. 04:39.000 --> 04:42.000 So, and it's not only like Yellowpaint. 04:42.000 --> 04:46.000 I've seen yellow leaves in Prince of Persia, the latest game, 04:46.000 --> 04:48.000 which seemed a bit awkward to me. 04:48.000 --> 04:53.000 I mean, it's a Metroidvania and I'm supposed to explore. 04:53.000 --> 05:01.000 So, yeah, there is this wind and these leaves leading me to the next place. 05:01.000 --> 05:07.000 But then all of a sudden the following section is like proper 05:07.000 --> 05:14.000 labyrinthine sort of type of deal that you have to explore and find your way around. 05:14.000 --> 05:15.000 Right? 05:15.000 --> 05:20.000 So I think for, and if you go more cinematic, 05:20.000 --> 05:27.000 it's for developers, their role is to teach audiences too. 05:27.000 --> 05:32.000 So I understand when you sort of need some guidance. 05:32.000 --> 05:35.000 But for example, I recently started Viewfinder. 05:35.000 --> 05:42.000 If you handhold the player too much, part of the magic is lost. 05:42.000 --> 05:47.000 And in those games where you have to realize what's possible in the world, 05:47.000 --> 05:50.000 such as Viewfinder, so you start the game right off, 05:50.000 --> 05:54.000 you fall off of a bridge, of a broken bridge. 05:54.000 --> 05:58.000 And that's the way the game uses to teach you, 05:58.000 --> 06:02.000 you can rewind by pressing circle on the PS5. 06:02.000 --> 06:09.000 So what if the game right off from scratch tells you, 06:09.000 --> 06:14.000 hey, you can use circle to rewind. 06:14.000 --> 06:19.000 Then you won't feel as much of a part of the experience itself, right? 06:19.000 --> 06:20.000 And I think that happens a lot. 06:20.000 --> 06:23.000 And I think, yeah, yellow paint when it's generic, 06:23.000 --> 06:30.000 yeah, you can perhaps switch it on and off or perhaps have a brighter paint 06:30.000 --> 06:32.000 for those who require it. 06:32.000 --> 06:36.000 But at the same time, sometimes it can be really intrusive in my opinion. 06:36.000 --> 06:37.000 Yeah, I would agree. 06:37.000 --> 06:41.000 I mean, I know there's a game coming up that I had a chance to play 06:41.000 --> 06:44.000 back at Gamescom called Botany Manor, 06:44.000 --> 06:46.000 which it's very similar to Viewfinder, right? 06:46.000 --> 06:49.000 It's those sort of puzzle games, first person. 06:49.000 --> 06:50.000 Again, it's not very fast. 06:50.000 --> 06:54.000 It's all about picking up clues and figuring out how to solve these problems. 06:54.000 --> 06:59.000 It's not a puzzle game in the sense that we've seen some other puzzle games, 06:59.000 --> 07:01.000 but it's very similar to Viewfinder in that regard. 07:01.000 --> 07:06.000 And again, they don't use those sort of accessibility features like that. 07:06.000 --> 07:09.000 If you get stuck on a puzzle, like you just have to sort of figure it out. 07:09.000 --> 07:12.000 You have to just sort of look at the clues and piece it together 07:12.000 --> 07:13.000 and figure out how it works. 07:13.000 --> 07:17.000 And I think it's got its benefits to doing that. 07:17.000 --> 07:19.000 But at the same time, there are other games at a faster pace 07:19.000 --> 07:23.000 that need to have that helping hand to be able to ease them along. 07:23.000 --> 07:25.000 And it's not, again, it's not just yellow paint. 07:25.000 --> 07:27.000 Like we use yellow paint as a prime example, 07:27.000 --> 07:33.000 but it's happened for decades now with things like red barrels, right? 07:33.000 --> 07:35.000 Everyone knows that a red barrel explodes, right? 07:35.000 --> 07:38.000 And you know that if something's red, then it's probably going to be explosive. 07:38.000 --> 07:41.000 And games have done that for years. It's not something that's new. 07:41.000 --> 07:47.000 So it's not just like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth with its ledges. 07:47.000 --> 07:48.000 Like, you know, you play a Resident Evil game, 07:48.000 --> 07:50.000 you know that you can smash the yellow crates. 07:50.000 --> 07:53.000 It's little things like that that you come to associate with it, 07:53.000 --> 07:55.000 which I guess is sort of like an industry-wide effort 07:55.000 --> 08:00.000 to engage people that don't want these tutorials. 08:00.000 --> 08:03.000 Which, you know, tutorials have their benefits. 08:03.000 --> 08:04.000 They have their weaknesses. 08:04.000 --> 08:08.000 I mean, I don't think the games journalism sector 08:08.000 --> 08:12.000 is ever going to escape the infamous cuphead thing. 08:12.000 --> 08:16.000 Like that was a tutorial that a man could not complete. 08:16.000 --> 08:18.000 So... 08:18.000 --> 08:20.000 Why don't you write that? 08:42.000 --> 08:45.000 So, yeah. 08:45.000 --> 08:49.000 But I mean, Cuphead do it as well with the pink things, right? 08:49.000 --> 08:52.000 So you know exactly which one that is the one 08:52.000 --> 08:55.000 that you can sort of interact with to get your little bonus thing. 08:55.000 --> 08:58.000 You know, they have that color to stand out 08:58.000 --> 09:00.000 so that people can register it and understand it. 09:00.000 --> 09:03.000 It's always been used in games in a multitude of senses. 09:03.000 --> 09:06.000 I think it's just used a lot these days, 09:06.000 --> 09:09.000 which people seem to pick up on. 09:09.000 --> 09:14.000 Accessibility features are in games more than they ever have been. 09:14.000 --> 09:18.000 You go into the settings menu and there's the whole fleet 09:18.000 --> 09:20.000 of different options that you can fiddle with. 09:20.000 --> 09:22.000 Not just colorblindness and all that, 09:22.000 --> 09:24.000 but like a variety of different features. 09:24.000 --> 09:25.000 And they're all great. 09:25.000 --> 09:28.000 You know, text to speech things and whatnot. 09:28.000 --> 09:30.000 I got into a bit of trouble at BlizzCon 09:30.000 --> 09:34.000 because I did an interview with the World of Warcraft guys 09:34.000 --> 09:38.000 and the new expansion is all about spiders. 09:38.000 --> 09:40.000 And I was like, maybe not one for the arachnophobes then. 09:40.000 --> 09:42.000 And he looked at me very seriously. 09:42.000 --> 09:44.000 And he was like, we're working on that. 09:44.000 --> 09:46.000 We're working on that. 09:46.000 --> 09:47.000 We're going to have that. 09:47.000 --> 09:48.000 We're going to claim that. 09:48.000 --> 09:50.000 You're going to sell the expansion. 09:50.000 --> 09:52.000 And I was like, yeah, okay. 09:52.000 --> 09:54.000 I was like, you know, maybe a little bit light. 09:54.000 --> 09:57.000 But I think, yeah, so they take it seriously 09:57.000 --> 09:58.000 in all aspects. 09:58.000 --> 10:03.000 It's not just helping people who already love games 10:03.000 --> 10:05.000 figure out how to do things easier. 10:05.000 --> 10:07.000 It's getting people who maybe are like, 10:07.000 --> 10:10.000 oh, I never would play that because really crippling fear 10:10.000 --> 10:11.000 of whatever, right? 10:11.000 --> 10:13.000 Spiders, certain bugs. 10:13.000 --> 10:15.000 You know, we've seen arachnophobia settings 10:15.000 --> 10:17.000 in a lot of other games as well. 10:17.000 --> 10:18.000 I love Grounded's one. 10:18.000 --> 10:19.000 Grounded's one's an old-timer. 10:19.000 --> 10:20.000 What's Grounded's one? 10:20.000 --> 10:21.000 I know the Lethal Company one, 10:21.000 --> 10:23.000 which is just big error signs coming in. 10:23.000 --> 10:24.000 Yeah. 10:24.000 --> 10:26.000 Grounded's similar to that, isn't it? 12:38.000 --> 12:41.000 They're used to not having those sort of tutorials 12:41.000 --> 12:43.000 that teach them how to play the game, 12:43.000 --> 12:45.000 and then they're just let loose in the world, 12:45.000 --> 12:47.000 like just go and figure out the rest of it yourself. 12:47.000 --> 12:49.000 I assume that the majority of the Roblox generation 12:49.000 --> 12:52.000 are going to face a huge amount of trouble 12:52.000 --> 12:55.000 when they become old enough and sort of coherent enough 12:55.000 --> 12:58.000 to be able to play a game like Elven Ring or From Software. 12:58.000 --> 13:01.000 They're going to really struggle with those really demanding titles, 13:01.000 --> 13:03.000 which they don't tell you how to play. 13:03.000 --> 13:04.000 If you want to figure something out, 13:04.000 --> 13:06.000 you're probably going to have to rely on guides, 13:06.000 --> 13:07.000 or just figure it out yourself. 13:07.000 --> 13:08.000 That's just the way those games are. 13:08.000 --> 13:09.000 Or Game Reactor. 13:09.000 --> 13:10.000 Oh, Game Reactor, yeah. 13:10.000 --> 13:11.000 For example. 13:11.000 --> 13:12.000 Yeah, Game Reactor, From, yeah. 13:12.000 --> 13:15.000 So I think that there is an argument definitely there 13:16.000 --> 13:18.000 newer players are taught how to play games, 13:18.000 --> 13:22.000 because I think that there's a lot of new games 13:22.000 --> 13:24.000 that don't do that very well. 13:24.000 --> 13:28.000 And yes, I understand that we're in this new sort of era 13:28.000 --> 13:30.000 of consumption, right? 13:30.000 --> 13:34.000 With how we sort of get our entertainment. 13:34.000 --> 13:36.000 It's quicker, it's faster paced than it ever has been, 13:36.000 --> 13:39.000 and people want to skip those sort of elements. 13:39.000 --> 13:41.000 But there has to be... 13:41.000 --> 13:42.000 There's something there. 13:42.000 --> 13:44.000 I have a big question here. 13:44.000 --> 13:51.000 So if Roblox generation is the same as FIFA slash EAFC generation, 13:53.000 --> 13:55.000 where is the middle ground between both? 13:55.000 --> 14:00.000 Because if you start playing EAFC for the first time, 14:00.000 --> 14:03.000 you've never touched a football game before, 14:03.000 --> 14:05.000 or NBA 2K, for example. 14:05.000 --> 14:06.000 Yeah. 14:06.000 --> 14:09.000 But then delve into the tutorial section, 14:10.000 --> 14:15.000 that gives you, at least would give me four weeks of playtime 14:15.000 --> 14:19.000 only focused on the potential, like the skill moves, 14:19.000 --> 14:24.000 the many things you can do by combining many buttons, etc. 14:24.000 --> 14:29.000 So how does that audience specifically, 14:29.000 --> 14:34.000 like tackle, no pun intended, FIFA? 14:34.000 --> 14:36.000 How do they start? 14:37.000 --> 14:42.000 They learn, they absorb naturally how they can do the advanced moves, 14:42.000 --> 14:45.000 or they just play the very casual way? 14:45.000 --> 14:47.000 I wouldn't think that. 14:47.000 --> 14:49.000 What do you guys think? 14:50.000 --> 14:53.000 Yeah, it's definitely a difficult topic really, isn't it? 14:53.000 --> 14:57.000 Because sports games in general, I think, sort of... 14:59.000 --> 15:01.000 They have this sort of weird dynamic where some of them, 15:01.000 --> 15:03.000 like racing games and golf games, 15:03.000 --> 15:05.000 they have all these systems baked in, 15:05.000 --> 15:07.000 and it's really easy to pick up and understand them 15:07.000 --> 15:09.000 even without that understanding of the sport. 15:09.000 --> 15:12.000 But I think that with the sort of football games, 15:12.000 --> 15:14.000 and even games like Madden, for example, 15:14.000 --> 15:15.000 they don't do that. 15:15.000 --> 15:17.000 They don't really teach you the dynamics of the sport. 15:17.000 --> 15:19.000 They teach you the core mechanics of how to play the game, 15:19.000 --> 15:22.000 but they don't teach you how to play the actual sport, 15:22.000 --> 15:24.000 like the actual game itself. 15:24.000 --> 15:27.000 And I think that there's definitely a topic of conversation. 15:27.000 --> 15:31.000 I mean, I know that FIFA, or I haven't played EA Sports FC24, 15:31.000 --> 15:33.000 but I know that FIFA has those sort of elements in place, 15:33.000 --> 15:36.000 like the sort of training exercises 15:36.000 --> 15:38.000 where you can go and do the shooting mechanics and stuff like that. 15:38.000 --> 15:40.000 So I know that they were always there, 15:40.000 --> 15:42.000 which sort of help a player understand those elements, but... 15:43.000 --> 15:44.000 They're deep. 15:44.000 --> 15:46.000 Very, very deep. 15:46.000 --> 15:47.000 Very deep, yeah. 15:48.000 --> 15:49.000 So it's... 15:49.000 --> 15:50.000 Go on, Alex. 15:50.000 --> 15:52.000 I was going to say, I find it interesting 15:52.000 --> 15:55.000 that it's Gen Z and Gen Alpha being spooned together, 15:55.000 --> 15:59.000 and I think something that might be a sort of way that... 15:59.000 --> 16:02.000 Because we're technically Gen Z, I think, then. 16:02.000 --> 16:04.000 But the gap, I would say, between... 16:04.000 --> 16:08.000 Like, my brother is, like, four years younger than me, 16:08.000 --> 16:10.000 and even the gap between me and him 16:10.000 --> 16:13.000 and how we've played games and we've grown up with games 16:13.000 --> 16:15.000 is vastly different. 16:15.000 --> 16:18.000 And I think a lot of that can come down to 16:18.000 --> 16:22.000 maybe, like, a second screen being always... 16:22.000 --> 16:25.000 Like, just sort of, like, always there. 16:25.000 --> 16:28.000 So you've always got your iPad to get up a YouTube guide, for example. 16:28.000 --> 16:30.000 You've always got your... 16:30.000 --> 16:32.000 It's like, a kid nowadays, you've always got, like... 16:32.000 --> 16:34.000 You know, maybe even another monitor 16:34.000 --> 16:36.000 if you're playing Roblox on PC or something, 16:36.000 --> 16:38.000 to, like, watch your favourite YouTubers who play the game 16:38.000 --> 16:39.000 so you play it like them. 16:39.000 --> 16:42.000 Maybe that's sort of the way that people 16:42.000 --> 16:45.000 might not struggle as much as they go forward 16:45.000 --> 16:48.000 with those, like, tougher games than... 16:48.000 --> 16:51.000 But, you know, Roblox, it can be tough, you know? 16:51.000 --> 16:53.000 I'm sure there's some game modes out there 16:53.000 --> 16:56.000 that are, like, you know, Elden Ring or whatever. 16:56.000 --> 16:57.000 Yeah. 16:57.000 --> 16:58.000 It's like a metaverse, isn't it?
